I have taken a great deal of effort to show the truths behind closed classrooms doors. As a student who takes her education seriously, I want to know all that I am getting is proficient and that the teachers who are holding my future in their hands, have more than enough to help me understand to the best of their abilities. However, in my research, I was amazed at what I discovered.
I have laid out a couple of questions out for the principal of my school and recorded our conversation of these questions. I was surprised to his answers, yet I was understanding as well. Question #1: How much money are teachers given for supplies? Dodson:” IT depends. If like you are a science teacher and must do labs or an art teacher where you are going have to make purchases of consumables like, clay they get kind of what they need. But for general teachers like, history and math they get fifty dollar a year.” I was astonished. How could a “generalized teacher” only get fifty dollars a year?! So, to see if teachers agreed to how much they here offered, I asked three teachers how they felt and here is their responses. Question #2 do you think that if students are given the opportunity to have more efficient technology and information with also hands on work that it would affect their lives positively? Dodson: “yes, yeah I wish we would do a lot more stuff like that” If he would like us to do more stuff like hands on why not provide it for us? Students deserve the best from teachers and staff, and us having no choice for hands on can affect our learning. It could be something to really help us, but is not offered. So, I continue. Question #3 Do you think that the salary wage of around $50,311 plus night work of planning and grading affects the attitudes of teachers? Dodson: “The bad ones. Yeah um no I think first of all you don’t get into this profession to get rich. But at the same time, it is a good life because if I want to I can be home by four o’clock. I have a flexible leave time. A common misconception is that teacher have the summers off. But ultimately, they do have a lot of time off in the summer. I would say that it is a reasonable wage, but the problem is it is such an important job that I worry that the wages are so low that we don’t always get you know what I mean. People who might be amazing teacher but they know that they could make more selling insurance or something else. So, do I think that teachers are under pain yes. The good ones yes, the bad one’s no.” This response to my question out of all intrigued me the most, not because it is detailed and long but it has much meaning behind it. There is such a thing as bad teachers. As children, we would always complain about a teacher not being the best towards us so maybe we were right. Maybe the teacher really wasn’t all that good or us. Although as a high school student going to school is not all that fun, so we exaggerate sometimes, but if we know we do not like a teacher and some of our friends don’t like them then we can decide among ourselves that maybe that particular teacher is not the best. Another thing that was interesting to me was that Dodson believes that the “good” teachers deserve more in their salary, but how are people to determine bad or good teachers? There is no meter, no regular the( look up if there is a test for teachers to take to determine their skills) Question #5 How does budget cuts affect students and teachers? Teacher responses Question #2: Is the money you receive for your class enough to do what you need to teach efficiently? Teacher 1:” No.” Teacher 2:” Heck no! That’s kind of a funny one right there.” If you could see what I have to play hockey with all my physical education equipment is probably as old as I am. You gotta make do with what you have each department would love new things.” Teacher 3: “The money I get? Um it is for me because we don’t use a lot of pens or pencils in my room, so we have our fifty dollars and I usually spend it on earbuds and disks. A lot of odd things, it always seems to be enough.” Now, teacher number one is a science teacher. As I recall, Mr. Dodson had said “If like you are a science teacher and must do labs or an art teacher where you are going to have to make purchase consumables like, clay, they get kind of what they need.” This sounds far from what they need. After I had asked all my questions to teacher number one she had stated, “probably the most I have spent out of my pocket was around three hundred dollars.” The average teacher makes an average salary around fifty thousand dollars. Why should these teachers have to spend their hard-earned money on something that should be provided to them to provide to their students? On to question three. Question #3 Are you happy with your wage? Teacher 1: Yeah, i'm not happy with my spending habits.” Teacher 2: Um, of course, everyone would love to have more but overall i think with our economy and community im very happy with what I make.” Teacher 3: yes, but that's because when i started the salary was so low, the first couple of years i tough some of the teachers were on welfare because they made such a low alert and they would be living in low income houses, so that was kind of crazy. So, yes I am happy with the salary I make but you have to think i'm at the top of what I can make.” During my studies on this subject I have grown major knowledge on how teachers are treated. My mind has widen to the basic teacher's mind. My personal opinion I came to the conclusion teachers deserve way more than what they are given. Teachers are like trainers. They are training us for the bigger world and that's college. Us students would not be able to survive in the college world without them. The teachers in this world deserve the best. And that is my resting point.
